Emilia Bergmark-Jimenez

Emilia Bergmark-Jiménez (born 1982) is a freelance photographer from Stockholm. She studied at the Photography School in Gamleby and School of Photography in Gothenburg. Emilia has a history of exhibitions at Galleri Kontrast, Stockholm Photo Rare Books, Museum of Work in Norrköping, Center for Photography, Stockholm, Archives Hall of Smedjebacken and the Photo Fair in Stockholm and Gothenburg (info provided by Galleri London). She also has both a blog and portfolio online.

While researching Emilia I came across photo.box which has some wonderful text that describes her work:

“This may well be what remains of memory, when what is left to oblivion, is rescued by thickening the nearly empty space, the traces gaining contours that are not what was left behind, but are some ambiguous form we vaguely recognize as ours, as belonging to us, as representing this left-over area that is neither the object we knew, or the eye of the beholder. It is this lovely, strange in-between.”

The other series that I have chosen is Querida Abuela / Dear Grandmother was exhibited at the Galleri London in Uppsala, 14 August-6 September 2009. The exhibitions press release reads:

In December 2002 met Emilia Bergmark Jimenez her grandmother Vicenta Jimenez for the first time in Caracas, Venezuela. The exhibition Querida Abuela / [dear] grandmother are pictures from their first meeting and subsequent trips Emilia has to visit his family.

The exhibition includes images of the immediate vicinity without reservation but Emilia also sees his grandmother at a distance, mystical and exalted as an icon. Querida Abuela / [dear] grandmother is a picture story about love and intimacy, the family and alienation. There is also a story about the issues concerning the representation of the photograph and memory. If what’s left of the people we love.”
